{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences close call with F1 marshals
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two safety personnel darted across the track directly in front of him
The alarming incident happened on the third circuit when track officials were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to replace his broken nose section
Competitor's Live Reaction
Moments later, the team's competitor Lawson communicated to his team engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I approached Turn One and there were just two individuals dashing across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, frankly, it was incredibly risky"
Track Safety Questioned
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication at some point but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track track officials can be authorized to just sprint across the track in such a way. I have no idea why, I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but this must never be repeated"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the situation
"Following a turn one incident, race control was notified that fragments were located on the track at the apex of that corner" stated the governing body
"In the third rotation, marshals were informed and put on alert to access the circuit and recover the debris once every vehicle had gone by"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch officials were withdrawn and a safety warning flag was displayed in that section"
"We are still investigating what happened following that moment"
