Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australian One-Day International Lineup Versus India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-game ODI series facing India, as in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a shock call-up.

Performance Issues Result in Omission

Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the ODI squad after managing only a single run in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a highest score of 47 in his previous ten ODI batting appearances.

The batsman has featured in 68 one-day internationals and amassed 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.

Renshaw's Return and Team Changes

Labuschagne has shown signs of a resurgence with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

The left-hander may to make his ODI debut in the forthcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.

Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a return to the Test team as Australia look for a solution to their batting top-order problems.

Squad Selection Strategy and Schedule

Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-match series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the final game against New Zealand to secure a two-nil victory last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India commences on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from 29 October.
