The Video Platform Offers Viewers Authority to Reduce AI-Generated Content in Personal Streams

The platform is rolling out a fresh option that allows them to reduce the volume of AI-made videos appearing in their streams. This step comes as the service announced that it currently hosts over 1 billion AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

The new functionality is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a widespread rollout. This development coincides with a surge in AI-generated material, fueled by recent content generation software.

AI Proliferation Online

Recent reports that almost one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding channels on a competing service primarily display clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this output is considered “AI slop”, a phrase for substandard, mass-produced content that is often illogical or bizarre.

Our research shows that many people appreciate content made with AI tools, from computer-generated images to science explainers, and we aim to give people the power to increase or decrease of that, based on their own preferences,” commented a platform representative.

Volume and Proportions

The platform disclosed that there are currently over a billion videos on its app tagged as made with AI. In total, in excess of 100 million pieces of content are submitted to the platform each day, making AI content a limited portion of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Members will be able to decrease or raise the level of AI-generated videos they watch by accessing the “manage topic” option in the platform and selecting AI-made media. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the setting include politics, style, cosmetics, and choreography.

Platform Guidelines

Its rules mandate content makers to identify convincing artificially created content, and it bans dangerous deepfakes of well-known individuals or emergencies. Any realistic artificial content that is not labeled can be removed under its community policies.

Furthermore, the app will now attach an AI-generated watermark to content made using its own AI tools, or flagged by an cross-platform project for identifying AI-generated material. This measure is designed to stop users from attempting to evade the tagging system.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is furthermore launching a $2m educational fund for professionals and organizations to create educational content about ethical AI use. This project will support charitable organizations focused on training computer science.

Platform Protection

The video-sharing app has defended its safety measures, amid controversy over proposals to cut jobs for a large number of safety staff in the UK. TikTok is planning to reduce 439 jobs in its user protection department in its British office, with worker representatives and online safety experts raising concerns that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A senior executive clarified that people-led review would continue to be important, but automated tools can protect employees by filtering out the most distressing content before it gets reviewed by humans. The platform stated a notable drop in explicit and harmful content seen by human moderators over the last 12 months due to reliance on its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to integrate staff and AI to maintain a secure environment,” she said. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we also think it’s very important to minimize viewing of dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a extensive automated help is proving valuable work at speed.”
