UK Broadens Methanol Poisoning Alert List with Eleven Destinations
British authorities has added 11 further destinations to its public advisory register regarding the risks of toxic alcohol contamination from contaminated spirits.
The revised advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a global increase in the number of reported cases" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Only recently, officials had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, after multiple serious events such as the tragic loss of six tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being warned that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can cause blindness or loss of life within 12–48 hrs.

Industrial alcohol is a harmful chemical commonly used in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. It is not intended for drinking.
While it is generated during the production of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers reduce it to low, safe levels for drinking through the purification method.
Yet in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to save money, and since it is tasteless and scentless, it is very difficult to detect.
Government Guidance for Tourists
Authorities minister the minister stated that all travellers should know the indicators of toxic alcohol toxicity.
"If you're having drinks overseas, opt for well-known venues and steer clear of homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the official said.
"Should anything feels off, like a headache that's far more intense than typical or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor right away."
